This three-evening workshop is a stand-alone class for individuals new to woodworking and/or a prerequisite for experienced woodworkers new to the Edina Community Center Woodshop, hoping to join our Open Shop sessions. In this class you will learn best practices for the safe operation of our table saws, jointer, planers, bandsaws, router table, and sanders. In addition to learning a myriad of power tools, you will learn how to do a glue-up, correctly use clamps, and create a finished scrap-wood cutting board. You will leave feeling inspired and empowered to do your own woodworking projects, from rough lumber to a piece of functional art. Join Sherry Kempf this fall to hone your writing craft in a safe and supportive environment. Whether you've just started putting pen to paper, or you have been working on that first novel for a decade, you'll enjoy the combination of monthly check in and workshop style meetings paired with targeted feedback and work on your own in between meetings. Before each scheduled class, you will receive a prompt from the instructor, which you may use to prepare a piece for class or write something entirely on your own. One week before class, you will email your writing to the entire group for review. During class, the group will discuss each writer's work respectfully with a focus on constructive feedback, growth and encouragement. The instructor will provide written feedback for each submitted piece, and participants are encouraged to provide written feedback to each other as well. In the case of inclement weather this class will be held on Zoom. Instructor will provide details before the first class session. Sherry Kempf. Sherry holds an MFA with an emphasis in Creative Nonfiction from Hamline University (2000). Her professional background includes teaching creative writing at Creative Arts High School (1997–2010), serving as adjunct faculty in education at St. Catherine University (2000–2010), and leading professional development courses for the St. Paul Public Schools Office of Equity (2010–2022). Her work spans a range of genres and has been published in MinnPost, RiverTeeth, Barnraiser, Minnesota Parent, Minnesota Poetry Calendar and others. Robert teaches traditional Tai Chi Chuan as taught by the Wu family, which is one of the main styles of TCC. It is a relaxing exercise that restores energy to the body and mind, as well as improving strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination. Each of these classes can either be taken alone, or in conjunction with another Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan course should the student want to learn at a faster rate. Ages 13 + are welcome to attend with an adult. Both participants must register and pay. All three sections of this class are being offered hybrid. You may attend in person here at the Edina Community Center or online in your own home. You will receive the Zoom link in your confirmation letter from ARUX. This yoga class focuses on improving mobility, enhancing flexibility, and supporting full-body recovery. Through a combination of gentle flows, deep stretches, and mindful breathing, participants will release tension, increase joint range of motion, and promote muscle repair. Suitable for all levels, the class emphasizes slow, controlled movements and restorative postures to help reduce soreness, prevent injury, and improve overall movement quality. If you have previously taken Maria's Yoga for Core & Pelvic Floor Strength, you will find similarities. Please bring a blanket as well as a favorite yoga mat if you have one.
