Age is less important than proficiency in the noted skills.*** If you already have some springboard diving experience, you can continue to build on the skills you've learned in earlier classes. Intermediate divers will be encouraged to try reverse dives, somersaults in all directions, twisting dives, etc. Often divers will take this class more than one time to achieve proficiency in the skills expected in Competitive Diving. When the diver is ready to move to Competitive, coaches will move them up even during the middle of a session. Intro to Fly Fishing on the Stream with Scott Harness - IntergenerationalLifelong LearningLive 5 hour fly fishing class on the trout stream. Includes one hour introduction to everything fly fishing! We will discuss gear, flies, rigging and knots followed by fly casting lessons both on dry ground and on the river. Next, we put on waders and boots and and go fishing for trout under the watchful eye of master guide and instructor Scott Harness. We will be fishing on the Rush River or the Kinnickinnic River in western Wisconsin which is a 1.25 - 1.5 hours from Mpls. For reference it’s the River Falls area. The location may vary slightly based on the river conditions. Scott will update the class a few days before the class starts about the exact location of the meeting spot. Ages 12 and up may attend with an adult learner. Intro to Printmaking w/ Local Artists: Gr. 5-8Art, Theater, Music & CreativityLearn a variety of printmaking techniques! Draw, Draft & Craft your own stamps, prints and trading cards - collected in a journal you bind yourself! A $20 materials fee has been included in the price of this class Artists Ches Cipriano (they/them) Their artistic practice is rooted in puppetry, laughter, animation, and tickling curiosities. Since 2017, they have shared their work on- and off- stage with theater and opera companies throughout Minnesota, and on-screen with small film festivals in the Midwest and New England. They treasure community-based art. Though they are often in various tech booths in the Twin Cities, you can also find them as one of the Producers of the Art Shanty Projects. Jake Quatt (he/him) Jake is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Minneapolis currently working in illustration, printmaking, animation, and shadow puppetry. Jake received his B.A in Fine Arts and Journalism from Beloit College in 2019 and moved to Minneapolis in early 2020. He currently illustrates for MadHat Press, Unlikely Books, and Spuyten Duyvil, puppeteers with The Heart of the Beast Theatre, and is a producer of O.H.N.O. Puppet Shows with the Puppet Union. WaitlistIntroduction to Foraging: Discovering Wild Foods - IntergenerationalLifelong LearningSpring offers many tasty opportunities for the growing forager! Join Maria Wesserle of Four Season Foraging in this introductory class about common wild edibles. We will start inside for a slideshow presentation, then move outdoors to explore wild edible plants of the spring landscape. Together we will learn about laws and ethics around foraging, as well as identification, harvest, and preparation of edible species. Please dress for the weather (rain or shine!) and be prepared to walk around a mile. Plants we will probably encounter include garlic mustard, burdock, dandelion, plantain, and many others! You will leave with a newfound appreciation for the wild plants that grow all around us plus a greater sense of confidence in foraging your own food! This class is intergenerational. Ages 14 and up may attend with an adult. We will start inside the Edina Community Center in room 315 for a slideshow presentation, then move outdoors to explore wild edible plants of the early summer landscape. Joy of Exploration!: SAORI Weaving with Chiaki O’Brien - UnifiedLifelong LearningJoin local artist Chiaki O’Brien for SAORI Weaving in 2026! Originally from Japan, Chiaki brings SAORI Weaving to participants ranging from small children to older adults. This modern Japanese weaving style has traveled along with her since she came to the United States in 2004. SAORI is a way of self-expression through weaving, and an opportunity to enjoy the moment of weaving with colors and textures! Chiaki will provide SAORI looms for the students to work on and she will facilitate and encourage students as they develop skills and enjoy the SAORI Weaving process. The aim of the workshop is for students to create a one-of-a-kind piece of woven art! Jumpstart Retreat: Gr. 6Expand Your World & EnrichmentPlease Note- Both sections will take place at South View Middle School due to summer construction projects at other buildings in the district. South View Students- We encourage you to sign-up for the class on Monday, August 10. Valley View Students- We encourage you to sign-up for the class on Wednesday, August 12. The 6th Grade Jumpstart Retreat is a highly engaging retreat that helps students feel ready and confident as they begin middle school. It’s all about connection, confidence, and community! During the retreat, students will get to know their classmates, and learn what life in middle school is really like. Through fun team challenges, games, and small group activities, students will build friendships, practice communication skills, and gain helpful tools for success both inside and outside the classroom. The retreat also focuses on developing a positive mindset, encouraging students to see new experiences as opportunities to meet new friends, develop new skills, and gain confidence as they grow. By the end of the retreat, students will walk away with new friends, more confidence, and excitement for the year ahead.
