Coming out in mid-2026, the movie "The Odyssey" will be the film event of the year. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, and Anne Hathaway plays Penelope. To best appreciate the movie, learn about the epic poem on which it’s based. This course will describe Homer and the poem—which, along with Homer’s "Iliad", are the oldest works of Western literature and actually pre-date writing. In addition to the poem, the class will present the history of the period and the method by which Homer crafted his works. This class will explore the history, culture, and especially the art of the first civilization in Europe: the Minoans of the island of modern-day Crete. This egalitarian, peace-loving civilization flourished from circa 3000 B.C. till 1200 B.C.
