Zero to Zero Accent: Casual French ConversationLifelong LearningJoin Maria Vallejo to practice your French. This course was previously offered on Wednesday mornings and for all levels. This class will work best for students who already have an intermediate or almost intermediate level of French. The date and have time have changed due to instructor change. Maria has taught both French and Spanish all of her adult life. She is a native of Spain but spent her early years in Northwestern France and later lived in Venezuela. The Decline of Global Democracy with Professor Richard LeitchLifelong LearningThe Future of Democracy with Professor Dr. Richard Lietch You may know Professor Dr. Richard Lietch from his Great Decisions presentation on U.S. China Relations. Back by popular demand, Dr. Lietch has agreed to enlighten us on the topic of The Decline of Global Democracy. This Great Decisions style presentation will be held virtually during the snowy, cold winter month of February. All you have to do is sign up, open up your computer, grab your coffee or hot cocoa and tune in live on Zoom. Join our distinguished expert Prof Lietch for this engaging and enlightening exploration of a topic that is on all of our minds. Associate Professor in Political Science, Environmental Studies, and Japanese Studies Dr. Richard Leitch earned his BA in East Asian Studies from Colby College in 1985, and went on to earn an MA in Asian Studies from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign after a two-year career on Wall Street. He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Illinois in 1995, where he was the recipient of the Harriet and Charles Luckman Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching, and the College of Liberal Arts Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Graduate Assistant. He has been a member of the Political Science Department at Gustavus since 1996, where he teaches courses in International Relations, Comparative Politics, Asian Politics, Environmental Politics, and the Politics of Poverty. In 2000 he received the Swenson-Bunn Award for Teaching Excellence at Gustavus, and in 2008 the Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching. In 2012 he was included in The Princeton Review's The Best 300 Professors. His research interests include Japanese domestic politics and foreign policy, and he is the co-author of Japan's Role in the Post Cold War World. Starting SoonHand Knit Chunky Blanket Experience - IntergenerationalLifelong LearningThe price on this class has been decreased by $20 in order to make it more affordable and more accessible to more people. Connect with your creative side and join us for our no-experience-required art class. Jeremy Ross from Your Bearded Artist will guide you through hand knitting your very own soft, chunky blanket. During this one-of-a-kind event, Jeremy will guide you step-by-step. No needles or knitting experience is required and all supplies will be provided. You will receive 140 yards (5 skeins) of size 7 chunky yarn (100% polyester) available in a variety of colors. Your completed blanket will measure approximately 40”x50”. Families can join in on the blanket making fun. Ages 8 and up if accompanied by an adult are welcome to join. Sometimes working as a 2 person family team is a great way to make sure the young ones get the attention they need.
