This three-evening workshop is a stand-alone class for individuals new to woodworking and/or a prerequisite for experienced woodworkers new to the Edina Community Center Woodshop, hoping to join our Open Shop sessions. In this class you will learn best practices for the safe operation of our table saws, jointer, planers, bandsaws, router table, and sanders. In addition to learning a myriad of power tools, you will learn how to do a glue-up, correctly use clamps, and create a finished scrap-wood cutting board. You will leave feeling inspired and empowered to do your own woodworking projects, from rough lumber to a piece of functional art. Learn how to make endgrain cutting boards using repeating patterns. Participants will learn the multiple steps to prepping, cutting, gluing, trimming and finishing endgrain cutting boards. There will be a review of different patterns that can be created and a discussion about what wood species to use. Make your own rustic wooden jack o'lantern and get an introduction to woodworking. With assistance of an instructor, you will use the miter saw and table saw to cut the pieces and the jig saw or scroll saw to cut out the jack o' lantern face. You can refine the face with a rasp and sand paper and then assemble the box with wood glue and a nail gun or brad nails. We will leave an opening in the back to insert a battery-operated candle. During this introduction to bowl turning class, students will have the opportunity to work on their own green bowl, being able to take a finished bowl home at the end of class. As part of learning this process, class will cover the basics of parts of the lathe, how to mount and secure a bowl blank, using the proper tools, and learning how to turn the inside and outside of a bowl. During the first part of class, students make the outside of their bowl, while the second part of class will be focused on carving out the inside. Description: In this class you'll learn how to turn a small bowl or dish. The course will start with the anatomy of a lathe, staying safe while turning, and appropriate technique for carbide tools (steel tools will be discussed). We will go through the process of mounting a blank, how to properly shape a tenon, and the process of hollowing. We will end with sanding, and there will be options to either finish on or off the lathe depending on intended use or preference. All materials will be provided. In this class you'll learn the ins and outs of spindle turning. The course will start with the anatomy of a lathe and safety while turning, before learning to mount blanks and how to use both carbide and steel tools. Materials will be provided to turn a handle for a screwdriver (the driver itself will be included) or a mallet, or you may come with your own project in mind (feel free to reach out to me in advance of the class if you have another idea, like making a new knob for a bench plane or handle for a chisel). Are you interested in improving your home? Do you have remodeling or home maintenance questions? Join Peter Schulze, our Woodshop Lead, for our first home improvement class at Edina Community Ed. Peter has 30 years of experience as a remodeler/carpenter and he is eager to share his knowledge with you. Each class will focus on different home improvement topics listed below with dates. Whether you live in Edina, Bloomington, Eden Prairie, or elsewhere, Peter will direct you to the resources you need. You will receive an email with a short google form from Peter before class starts in which you will share plans, questions, and or photos of projects that are on your mind. * This class is meant as an introduction to home improvement and a general understanding of construction principles. The instructor will answer your questions and assist you with your projects but shouldn't replace the need for a professional contractor. 1) November 6, 2026 - Residential Home Fundamentals - This first class will cover the structure, design and landscaping of residential homes including everything you need to know about pulling permits and hiring contractors. 2) November 13, 2026 - Exterior Finishing - In this second class we will discuss the different types of exterior finishes, windows and doors, roofing, flashing, as well as waterproofing, sealing, and insulation. 3) November 20 - Interior Finishing - From drywall to painting, flooring to finished carpentry, Peter will go over all you need to know to make your interior pop! 4) December 4, 2026 - Plumbing, Electrical, and HVAC Basics - During this class you will learn about how each of these systems work in your home and give an overview of their fundamental design. Common problems and remodeling concerns will also be addressed. 5) December 11, 2026 - Garages, Porches, Decks, and Landscaping - The final class will look at other structures and landscaping found outside of the home. The class will look at the specifics of garages and driveways, porch/deck design and construction, and different landscaping features such as retaining walls, walkways and fences. Participants will learn the basics of using a variable temperature woodburning tool. Students will learn how to use the different tips and techniques to create different effects and textures. They then will use what they have learned to create unique and personalized composition that they will bring home with them.
