Home Improvement with Peter

Are you interested in improving your home? Do you have remodeling or home maintenance questions? Join Peter Schulze, our Woodshop Lead, for our first home improvement class at Edina Community Ed. Peter has 30 years of experience as a remodeler/carpenter and he is eager to share his knowledge with you.  Each class will focus on different home improvement topics listed below with dates. Whether you live in Edina, Bloomington, Eden Prairie, or elsewhere, Peter will direct you to the resources you need. You will receive an email with a short google form from Peter before class starts in which you will share plans, questions, and or photos of projects that are on your mind. 

* This class is meant as an introduction to home improvement and a general understanding of construction principles. The instructor will answer your questions and assist you with your projects but shouldn't replace the need for a professional contractor. 

1) June 4, 2026 - Residential Home Fundamentals - This first class will cover the structure, design and landscaping of residential homes including everything you need to know about pulling permits and hiring contractors. 

2) June 11, 2026 - Exterior Finishing - In this second class we will discuss the different types of exterior finishes, windows and doors, roofing, flashing, as well as waterproofing, sealing, and insulation. 

3) July 16, 2026 - Interior Finishing - From drywall to painting, flooring to finished carpentry, Peter will go over all you need to know to make your interior pop! 

4) July 30, 2026 - Plumbing, Electrical, and HVAC Basics -  During this class you will learn about how each of these systems work in your home and give an overview of their fundamental design. Common problems and remodeling concerns will also be addressed.

5) August 6, 2026 - Kitchens & Bathrooms - Class 5 will focus on everything you need to know about Kitchen & bathrooms. Including kitchen layout, cabinets, countertops, bathroom layout, shower/bath enclosures, and the specifics of electrical, plumbing and ventilation for the most complicated rooms in most houses. 

6) August 20, 2026 - Garages, Porches, Decks, and Landscaping - The final class will look at other structures and landscaping found outside of the home. The class will look at the specifics of garages and driveways, porch/deck design and construction, and different landscaping features such as retaining walls, walkways and fences.
